Reimagined Loew’s Jersey Theatre Set to Reopen in ’26
OTJ Architects’ restoration of the historic Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, New Jersey, marks a new chapter in the area’s cultural resurgence.
Set to reopen in the Fall of 2026, the 1929 Theatre was originally designed by Rapp & Rapp and is noted for its richly detailed Baroque and Rococo-inspired exterior as well as Italian Renaissance style auditorium. The Theatre’s return comes as Journal Square, where it is sited, continues to evolve into a lively destination complete with new arts venues and residential growth. The renovation expands upon our firm’s portfolio of similar transformative interventions on other Loew’s properties nationwide.
Shaped through close collaboration with the client, preservation partners, and the local community, our approach balances careful restoration with strategic updates. The project revitalizes the Grand Lobby and box office, restores historic design features, including the Theatre’s original crystal chandelier, and introduces contemporary concessions, modern audiovisual systems, and expanded restroom facilities to improve patron comfort and circulation. Inside the auditorium, re-raked orchestra seating with removable tiered platforms enhances flexibility, allowing the space to accommodate a wide range of performances and audience configurations.
Behind the scenes, upgrades ensure the Theatre functions as a 21st century performing arts venue while retaining its historic character. New lighting, rigging, projection, acoustic, and mechanical systems meet ever more exacting technical standards, while added dressing rooms, flexible support spaces, offices, and improved loading access enhance operational efficiency for performers and production teams.
