Heidrick & Struggles
Heidrick & Struggles, a global executive search and leadership advisory firm, seized on its relocation to partner with OTJ Architects and design a new destination workplace that would reflect its international reach as well as the unique character of its Washington, DC team. Our solution helps shed outdated office modalities in favor of a hospitality-inspired environment that better supports the firm’s business model. Planning centered on protecting the privacy of clients and candidates while carefully avoiding the creation of silos that would compromise workplace connectivity.
Building on the findings of a pre-existing workplace strategy brief, OTJ translated established operational priorities into a cohesive design solution that seamlessly accommodates both client-facing interactions and daily operations. Close collaboration with the client’s global real estate team and local leadership ensured consistency with organizational standards while allowing the office to establish its own regional identity. Acoustic performance, visual privacy, and intuitive circulation guided the design from concept through execution.
From the moment of entry, where a suite of interview rooms adjoins a sculptural reception desk, discreet circulation paths and secure access points preserve the confidentiality of the interview process. A dedicated holding room offers an additional layer of privacy, allowing guests to wait comfortably without crossing paths with other candidates.
Beyond the secure threshold, the workplace shifts from hospitality to collaboration. A centrally located work café encourages informal interaction before the floorplan transitions into quieter work areas that support focused tasks. Strategic acoustic interventions include enhanced wall assemblies, taller acoustic baffles, and carefully placed sound masking.
The material palette conveys understated sophistication through clean architectural detailing, warm finishes, and restrained hospitality-inspired elements that elevate the workplace without distraction. The result is an environment that reflects Heidrick & Struggles’ commitment to professionalism, discretion, and exceptional client service while providing employees with a workplace that supports collaboration, concentration, and meaningful connection.
