University of North Carolina
Located directly across from Capitol Hill, the University of North Carolina’s Washington DC hub (UNC DC) places the institution within immediate reach of the nation’s most influential decision-makers. A leading research institution with a strong focus on public service and policy engagement, UNC partnered with OTJ Architects to develop a built solution that would empower the advancement of its mission in the context of the capital. Both home base and civic platform, this new space expands the university’s visibility while strengthening connections to policymakers, alumni, and the AAU network.
The realization of this ambitious program called on our team to partner closely with UNC stakeholders and prioritize long-term impact, navigating budget modifications to support the goal of a multi faceted events and education space. Proactive reallocation and iterative pricing decisions ensured the project remained focused on a singular objective: create a flexible, high-performing environment that elevates UNC’s presence while supporting meaningful exchange across institutions.
The resulting environment unfolds through a carefully choreographed experience. Visitors are welcomed into a reception space defined by tailored paneling, integrated branding, and curated campus imagery that, together, immediately establish identity and purpose. From there, the plan opens into a light-filled café and work zone where shared tables, booth seating, and a crafted bar create a dynamic center of activity. This social core allows for a seamless transition from daily use to large-scale, often high-profile, gatherings and is supported by a concealed pantry designed for coffee service and catered events. A glass-fronted multipurpose room expands and contracts through operable partitions, allowing the same footprint to host focused learning, policy discussions, and multi-university convenings with equal clarity and presence. The program also includes a wellness room that supports students balancing academic and professional responsibilities as well as family obligations, alongside a podcast studio designed to expand the boundaries of policy maker engagement.
Here, “Chapel Hill meets Capitol Hill” with warmth and precision. Wood lattice ceilings, tailored millwork, and acoustic finishes frame a continuous graphic wall layered with athletic imagery, as well as academic and campus visuals, while integrated displays highlight UNC memorabilia. This active environment is distinctly UNC and purpose-built to support its expanded civic, academic, and collaborative role on a national stage.
