OTJ’s Growing Healthcare & Wellness Practice Area

Healthcare is moving beyond the confines of traditional settings. From neighborhood pediatric practices and specialty clinics to wellness centers, behavioral health facilities, and national outpatient networks, providers are rethinking where – and how – patients receive care.

For more than two decades, OTJ has been designing environments that support this evolution. Today, that experience is coming together as a growing Healthcare and Wellness Practice Area focused on creating highly functional, welcoming, and scalable outpatient environments that advance the patient experience and the delivery of care.

OTJ brings together architects and designers with experience spanning medical offices, outpatient clinics, pediatrics, dermatology, orthopedics, imaging, behavioral health, infusion therapy, wellness, and other specialized environments. This collective knowledge allows our teams to approach healthcare design through a uniquely broad lens that balances technical requirements with the human experience at the center of every project.

Reimagining the Patient Experience Through Design

The healthcare landscape continues to shift toward outpatient care, with providers bringing more services into convenient, community-based environments. For patients, that shift can mean greater accessibility, shorter visits, and settings that feel less institutional. For providers, it introduces a different set of design considerations: operational efficiency, staff workflows, patient privacy, technology, equipment, brand consistency, and the ability to adapt as care models evolve.

OTJ’s outpatient healthcare experience reflects the breadth of this changing landscape. Recent projects range from Capital Area Pediatrics, a 7,200-square-foot pediatric practice in Oakton, Virginia, and Alexandria Associates in Dermatology, a 10,000-square-foot specialty practice, to Pediatrix Medical Group locations in Virginia and Maryland, Aledade’s 19,500-square-foot Bethesda workplace and a Navy Federal Credit Union Wellness Center in Vienna, Virginia

Our teams are also currently designing projects such as the Princeton Longevity Center in Potomac, Maryland, a new Pediatric Care Center in Bethesda, and Perfect B Aesthetic Medicine in Miami. Together, these environments demonstrate how healthcare design is becoming increasingly diverse – and increasingly integrated into the places where people already live and work.

Designing Healthcare at Scale

As healthcare organizations expand, designers are challenged to create consistent experiences across locations while also responding to each community’s unique needs. OTJ recently partnered with a national behavioral healthcare provider to evaluate more than 25 locations across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, resulting in 11 projects ranging from targeted renovations to full relocations. Similarly, our ongoing work with BrightSpring Health Services’ Amerita includes multiple infusion centers nationwide that help refine standards and support a more consistent patient and staff experience portfolio-wide.

Through the development of repeatable planning strategies, design standards, and scalable solutions, OTJ helps healthcare organizations accelerate decision making, improve project outcomes, and create recognizable, high performing environments across growing networks.

The Future of Healthcare & Wellness

As outpatient care expands, healthcare environments are increasingly influenced by hospitality and workplace design. OTJ’s multidisciplinary expertise allows us to create spaces that are both clinically effective and experience-driven, helping organizations attract patients, support caregivers, and strengthen their brand.

OTJ partners with healthcare and wellness organizations of all types, from multi-location medical groups to specialty care providers, creating environments that enhance patient experiences, improve operational performance, and support evolving models of care.
