PlateletBio

The new PlateletBio headquarters is a high-performing laboratory and workspace that empowers scientists and researchers to develop transformative treatments for patients worldwide.

Inspired by nature’s own function and versatility, PlateletBio is a pioneering Life Sciences startup working to advance a diverse pipeline of next-generation cellular therapies for applications in hematology, oncology, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases. Since its founding, PlateletBio has raised more than $100M from top-tier biotech venture investors as well as through awards and contracts from the Biomedical Advance Research and Development Authority, the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health. PlateletBio engaged the design team to develop a high-performing laboratory and workspace that would empower scientists and researchers to develop transformative treatments for patients worldwide.

Driven by the dual mandates of speed to market and future proofing, PlateletBio’s new workplace builds on streamlined, universal solutions that harmonize best-in-class workplace and laboratory design practices. Budgetary imperatives as well as a keen awareness of investor optics informed the development of a restrained palette accented by bold branding gestures that reference the organization’s distinct field of research. While the reception area features a sculptural, abstract light fixture that nods to the platelet creation process itself, high-impact yet budget-savvy finishes selections amplify the possibilities of modest materials such as glass, natural wood, herringbone tile, and paint.

Rather than relegate the organization’s laboratories to ancillary or liminal spaces, designers elected to maximize the base building’s architecture and window line by locating these vital work areas in high-visibility perimeter real estate. Glass-fronted and flanked by both a reconfigurable multi-purpose room and a café, PlateletBio’s laboratories are now light-filled, flexible, and automated theaters of innovation for staff and visitors alike.

"Working with OTJ was a fantastic experience. Throughout the process, OTJ was responsible for design but also called upon to step into the role of project manager. The result is a space that is truly our own."
